Freshman Year

Here are a few tips to keep in mind to be successful in high school, which has a big impact on success in college:

  • Select your high school classes carefully. Work with your high school counselor to determine the best plan for you.

  • Enroll at SRJC as a high school student to get a head start on your college classes.

  • Enrollment fees are waived for High School Concurrent Enrollment Students, so take advantage while you are still in high school.

  • Grades matter! Freshman grades are the foundation for your high school transcript and are part of your GPA (Grade Point Average), which is reported to colleges or employers after high school. Keep more options open by getting good grades now!

  • Maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher will also qualify you to apply for the prestigious Doyle Scholarship in your senior year.

  • Get involved! Join clubs, volunteer, job shadow; participate in student government, athletics, or the arts.

  • Seek leadership positions in school or the community whenever possible.

  • Be sure to attend SRJC presentations or search out SRJC representatives when we are on your high school campus.

  • Visit SRJC.  Take an individual or group tour of the Santa Rosa Campus or Petaluma Campus; or take a self-guided tour of the Santa Rosa Campus.

  • Do "informational interviewing" of people in jobs or careers that interest you.

  • Attend summer classes, if possible.

  • Learn about the tests and entrance requirements for certain colleges and universities: ACT, SAT, for example.
